Max Bakkali

Tristan Marwan Bakkali, advanced elemental witch who is doing his best.

Appearance

  • Curly dark hair, worn longer
  • Big dark brown eyes
  • Full mouth
  • Light bronze complexion, of mixed Moroccan heritage
  • Tall (6'1'')
  • Pretty standard young adult wardrobe, jeans, hoodies, sneakers
  • Pretty good at fading into the background
  • Doesn't smile that often but uses his whole face to do it when he does
  • Slight buckteeth

Personality

  • Serious and quiet, very internal
  • Sometimes quite literal
  • Sort of a head in the clouds type, because his mind always seems to be somewhere else, vivid imagination
  • Spends what free time he has reading; never knows pop culture references
  • Terminally incapable of speaking up for himself with most people, the kind of person who will just eat the wrong food that was given to him
  • Extremely shy
  • Often anxious and prone to overthinking
  • Chronically lonely; often has trouble connecting to people, especially his peers
  • Once he does make a connection, however, he will hold on to it for dear life – perhaps past the point where he should, reasonably, let go
  • Generally just incredibly stubborn once he's made his mind up about something, though he takes his time getting there
  • Non-tactile for the most part
  • Very sentimental, very loyal
  • An overachiever – always wants to do well
  • Tends to be self-effacing despite that
  • Also mild-mannered to the point of occasionally being difficult to remember

Abilities

  • Elemental witch, achieved advanced status quite young
  • Serval familiar named Quioxte, also settled quite early
  • Generally magically precocious
  • Casting style is efficient, almost abbreviated
  • May eventually work his way to adept status, most likely with a second specialization in enchantment
  • Memory retention off the charts

History

  • Third generation American
  • An only child
  • Named after his maternal grandfather, thus goes by his middle name, Marwan, or nickname, Max
  • Parents marriage was sort of semi-arranged between a hereditary witch family and a mundane family who'd known about/worked with them for generations
  • His parents don't dislike each other but lead largely separate lives
  • Dad is an insurance company man who lives for the job and brings his work home
  • Mom is the leader of a coven, an adept witch with summoning and enchantment specializations
  • She was always very attentive to his magical education but didn't give him much attention as a person
  • Magically and academically precocious, always had his head in a book, didn't fit in well with his peers
  • Spent a lot of time at a local library when his parents were too busy for him
  • Often spent summers at Amber Hollow, with is paternal grandparents
  • Once met a Fae as a child in Amber Hollow and vacillates between vehemently believing it happened and that he imagined it
  • Was about 16 when the PWSA reveal happened
  • Chose to attend UCAH for several reasons, including that it was one of the first and only schools to offer PWSA Studies
  • A good student but less handy socially; it isn't that he doesn't want or try to make friends, he simply has difficulty communicating his own needs and wants and either gets trampled by bolder personalities or passed over completely

Relationships

  • Ibrahim Bakkali: Father, mundane, rather distant, but still a firm guiding hand. Does want to make him proud but doesn't really know how to do that
  • Mariyam Bakkali: Mother, and the greatest single influence on Max. Never got much attention from her beyond magical matters, but became focused on becoming a top student both magically and academically to please her
  • Bakkali Grandparents: Mundane. They dote on him as a firstborn son, but don't really understand much about magic. Treat his Fae story as childish fancy.
  • Lachlan: Max's childhood best friend who lives in Amber Hollow. Only saw him during the summers and missed him terribly when he left for home.
