Danny Hall

Daniel Isaiah Hall, lone wolf without a pack, though it's not for lack of wanting. It's just that the fear is bigger than the want.

Appearance

  • 6'', robust build; he doesn't get to the gym that often but he's active and from good farm stock
  • Golden-bronze complexion – he's of mixed heritage; his mother's side of the family is white but his mystery father's is clearly not
  • Grey eyes
  • Thick eyebrows
  • Curly black hair, thick and generally worn longer; a bit shaggy
  • Small white scar on his forehead from taking a tumble on gravel as a child
  • Lives in t-shirts and jeans
  • Fairly limited wardrobe since he's been nomadic for so long
  • Wolf form has a black coat with some grey undermarkings and the same light eyes

Personality

  • Aimless
  • Has always felt like he's missing something or someone but never sure what
  • Lonely, but so numb to it that he thinks he's fine
  • Seems affable and easygoing but in actuality quite distant and guarded
  • Extremely internal
  • Very sensitive to other's moods and emotions in a trauma response hypervilgilance kind of way
  • Also just sensitive in general, though he's repressed it
  • Spent a long time thinking he was uniquely monstrous but has been slowly coming around on it after meeting other werewolves, and especially once PWSA went public
  • Very desperately wants community and love but won't admit it to himself because he's equally intensely afraid of having either
  • Substitutes sex for intimacy because it's a way to feel close to someone without real commitment
  • Tends to follow the path of least resistance – will go along with most things, if he can't think of a reason to reject it, which sometimes leads to him being in situations he didn't actually want to be in
  • His instinct is to run the second he realizes he's getting too close to someone or too comfortable somewhere
  • Still, does his best to be kind and pay it forward where he can, because he has at times survived on the kindness of strangers

Abilities

  • An adult werewolf
  • Generally handy
  • Knows cars really well; basically rebuilt his from the ground up

History

  • Born a werewolf in Martins Ferry, Ohio
  • Danny's mother, Phoebe Elizabeth Hall, aged sixteen, accidentally got pregnant and was bitten by a werewolf passing through town in in close proximity
  • Forced to keep the pregnancy and terrified of what was happening to her, Phoebe fled after giving birth, leaving Danny to be raised by his grandparents
  • Ruth and Arnold Hall, deeply religious, were strict but not unkind to him in his early years, though there were already whispers about him being a brown bastard child in a very white, very small town
  • However, once he started shifting, shortly after starting school, they became convinced he was a creature of the devil, a symbol of their daughter's sin, and their attitude toward him changed sharply
  • Arnold in particular, already an advocate of “spare the rod, spoil the child”, became harsher and even more authoritarian
  • Danny was kept isolated from his peers, not allowed to leave the house unaccompanied, and even then not for anything but school or church
  • He was reminded over and over again that he was wrong and unnatural and no one could know about the true depth of their family's shame
  • During the three nights of the full moon he was locked away in his room and not allowed out for any reason
  • Grew up scared and disgusted by himself; used to pray for his 'condition' to be taken away
  • When he realized he was also attracted to boys during his early teens, Danny kept it to himself, taking it as just another sign that he was unnatural
  • He was finally allowed to get an afterschool job when he was fifteen, at an auto mechanic's shop just down the street from his grandparent's house
  • Gilberto Reyes, the owner of the shop, sympathized with him over being different in Martins Ferry and took Danny under his wing, teaching him the trade seriously
  • For his seventeenth birthday, Gil gifted him an old junker that Danny then spent the next year fixing up
  • Left town in that car with his savings when he graduated high school and never looked back
  • Struck out east because he'd always wanted to see the ocean and spent a few years drifting up and down the east coast, too restless to stay in any one place too long
  • Got by on doing odd jobs, sleeping in his car if he had to, and occasionally with a good Samaritan's help
  • Was taken advantage of a few times, but learned to be wary fast
  • Met another werewolf for the first time in a bigger city; realized for the first time that he wasn't as alone as he'd always thought
  • Struggled with his shame and guilt as he met more and more werewolves the more he traveled and slowly learned more about werewolf culture
  • Learning that being born a werewolf meant that his mother was one too radically changed his outlook on himself, though he still couldn't fully let go of his self-hatred
  • Began subconsciously seeking out local packs but never let himself get too close; he ran with a pack at night for the first time and left the next day
  • Also did a lot of sexual experimentation during this period – being exposed to the wider world helped loosen the hold his grandparents' views had on his psyche
  • Then, PAS were revealed to the world and it was a whole new arena
  • Found a witch not long after they were revealed and bought a location spell for his mother
  • Slowly started drifting west with the paper with her address on it safe in the glove compartment
  • Moved up and down the coastline when he hit the ocean but didn't work up the nerve to come to Amber Hollow until now
  • But it's a half-brother he didn't know he had that answers the door and tells him Phoebe has already passed
  • Now what?

Relationships

Grandparents: Very mixed emotions. On the one hand he's grateful that they raised him, fed him, kept a roof over his head; on the other he deeply resents the isolation, guilt, and pain they inflicted on him. Has no desire to see them again but has sent them a few blank postcards over the years just to let them know he's alive.

Gilberto Reyes: Probably the most important relationship of his life up to this point; very grateful for his kindness and mentorship. Never intends to return to Martins Ferry but also sends him chattier and more frequent postcards than he sends his grandparents.

Mother: Has slowly forgiven her over the course of his travels, but still has so many unanswered questions. When he found out she had already passed he was sad, and regretful that it took him so long to work up the courage to see her, but a small part of him also felt a guilty sort of relief.

Little brother: Supposes it makes sense that his mom had another kid if she made peace with her new identity and settled down, but doesn't know how he feels about it just yet.
