Extremely charming when he's being paid for it, terse and blunt when he isn't. Commitmentphobe with extreme abandonment issues, actually quite desperately wants to be loved. Would rather die than talk about his feelings.
Height: 6'1'' or so
Build: Rangy, kind of scrawny. Swam in high school, danced for a bit at college, and goes jogging pretty regularly but he's not exactly athletic. Runs pretty fast when he needs to, though.
Hair: Dark brown to black, wavy, unruly. Usually worn tied back low on his head, sometimes folded up into the most haphazard, perfunctory type of bun possible when he wants it off his neck. Only left down when he's feeling particularly lazy, and he's not averse to people messing around with it if he's in the right sort of mood. What's more, he'll just leave it alone until he either has to fix it for work or wash it, which has resulted in him drifting around with some pretty interesting things on his head. Usually has some kind of semi-annoying facial hair to avoid looking baby-faced, but sometimes shaves it off on a whim.
Eyes: Dark brown.
Style: At work, belted black slacks, solid-colored button-up shirts that are usually white, sometimes grey or black, more rarely something brighter, white socks and black oxfords. The rest of the time, it's old jeans and t-shirts, the occasional pair of sweatpants, sneakers or sandals, no socks at all. Tank tops in the summer but not shorts, sweaters and sweatshirts in the winter but not so much actual winter jackets. He'll wear a jean jacket or some dumb fashion jacket but he's whatever about the cold.
A bit quiet, a bit cold, and sharper-tongued than strictly necessary, Ethan often seems to be viewing the world through a soft focus lens. Capable of being a very charming individual, needing to be at his job, Ethan generally finds the effort to be a waste of energy. Meaning, what little he does say tends to be extremely blunt. That in itself is usually enough to keep most people away, and those manage to get past it are often surprised to find that Ethan is, in actuality, rather laid back. There's never any real malice in the sometimes-nasty things he says, he never pursues arguments, and, despite his penchant for biting remarks, is more likely to respond to baiting with a shrug than a barb.
Sometimes simultaneously acidic, blasé, and debonair, he answers questions with questions, writes poetry when he remembers to, never apologizes when he's wrong, and doesn't expect anyone else to either. He's spent so much time chasing the missing pieces of himself that he's lost sight of the original goal; half the time Ethan can't even remember how to fit with other people properly. What friends he has never know what he's thinking, he holds grudges like an old woman, and never dates people he actually likes. He drinks too much coffee, doesn't eat properly, smokes only when he's too tired or angry or lonely to care, and hates it the entire time.
Drifting along in whatever direction life takes him, Ethan has no real ambition, nothing to ground him, and the cool front he presents the world has more to do with a lack of desire than anything else. Maybe time and failure haven't exactly dulled the ache of not belonging, but they've certainly helped him bury it, and most days he doesn't even remember it's there.
